POSITION: Server Administrator - VOIP Specialist

EXEMPT STATUS: Exempt

NUMBER OF DAYS: 226

PAY GRADE: Tech PG-5

DIVISION:

DEPARTMENT: Technology

REPORTS TO: Sr. Network Administrator

SUPERVISES: None

EDUCATION: Minimum Education/Certification:

  • At least one of the following is required:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Advanced Voice-Over-IP certification (CCNP or equivalent)
  • 4 years of relevant work experience in a position with wireless VoIP responsibilities EXPERIENCE: Minimum Experience:
    • 4 years of successful computer network related job experience
    • 1 year Voice over IP (VOIP) phone system management, design, upgrading, and management experience (Cisco preferred)
    • Experience with Cisco routing and switching preferred

      POSITION FUNCTION/PURPOSE:
      --- To manage the installation and maintenance of local area networks and data communication equipment to protect the security of the network, to ensure data integrity and retention of the district's systems, and to maintain high-availability of the network for students and staff with wireless devices. Maintain and troubleshoot Voice Over IP connections.

      MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

      Network Management

      1. Design, install, and maintain network equipment and software.

      2. Install network boards, drivers and workstation software.

      3. Assist in trouble shooting, diagnosing and repairing network and data communication problems.

      4. Coordinate computer activity with remote computer sites to help alleviate the loss of data communication between mainframe sites.

      Computer Systems

      5. Back-up Collaboration servers keeping accurate records of the dates and files.

      6. Assist school personnel in installing software.

      7. Set and enforce security and software restriction policies on network computers in accordance with best practices.

      8. Assist operations staff with duties in the computer room.

      9. Assist with other Technology and Information Management Department responsibilities as assigned.

      Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management

      10. Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director or as may be necessary for job effectiveness.

      Data Communications

      11. Make recommendations on network equipment used, configuration, policies and band widths used throughout the district.

      12. Provide information used to plan budgets.

      Professional Growth and Development

      13. Observe professional and ethical standards in accordance with generally accepted community standards and the Texas Education Agency code of ethics.

      14. Secure advanced training in any new equipment, software being considered for adoption by the District.

      15. Read the current literature in the field.

      SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

      None

      SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

      ? Knowledge of microcomputer configurations

      ? Familiarity with local area network topologies, wiring schemes, and operating systems

      ? Knowledge of Windows personal computer and server operating system installation and

      configuration

      ? Knowledge of data communication equipment and terminology

      ? Knowledge of network configuration, setup, and administration (VLAN, switches, routers,

      Wireless devices, etc.). Knowledge of maintaining and load-balancing a large network with multiple sites.

      ? Ability to effectively communicate with school personnel, systems staff and computer

      technicians

      Physical - Moderate carrying and lifting. Standing, sitting, walking, use of fingers, eyes and ears

      the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. must be able to maintain emotional control under stress. occasionally required to travel to facilities within the district. may be required to work after school and weekends.

      Equipment Used

      Microcomputers, network equipment, fiber and CAT5(6) cabling, switches, routers, wireless access points, network monitoring software, fiber splicing and testing tools.
